Bulgaria

A few years back I tried to photograph pelicans and flamingo's from floating hide in Albania. I enjoyed it but it was not a great success. It was impossible to approach them with the floating hide. The flamingo's were the worst. I crawled several times in their direction hoping they would be closer when I looked up, but they were even further away; they went way faster than me. The pelicans were better but there the water where they were feeding was not easily accessible with the floating hide.

So when I saw some pictures of pelicans and flamingo's from Yves Adams (my favorite photo guide) taken in Bulgaria with Emil Enchev (I knew him from the dalmatian pelicans in Kerkini Lake) my attention was drawn. Although the pictures were taken from a fixed hide I signed in on the trip because of my Albanian experience; but also because there were also floating hide sessions in the package and you should know by now that this is my favorite photo place to be: in a floating hide!

The combination of fixed and floating hide worked very well. Only the pelicans and flamingo's did not. Every year they loyally come and sit in front of the wonderfull hide Emil made, but not this year. The reason? Something with temperature, water level, food source? Who will tell; but most probably climate related. Anyway they stayed on the water in the distance.

But luckily there were enough other photo opportunities to grab. The floating hide location was wonderfull and the hides in the fish farm ponds gave plenty of opportunities. Moreover thanks to the creativity of Yves and Emil we could photograph waders in an incredible setting from a temporarily build hide.
