Het Lowland Photo Festival zou doorgegaan zijn op 11 en 12 december 2021 maar werd dus op het laatste moment onmogelijk gemaakt door de zoveelste wijziging van de corona maatregelen. Er is ook een fotowedstrijd aan verbonden. In principe neem ik geen deel aan fotowedstrijden, maar voor deze competitie heb ik een uitzondering gemaakt en toch beelden ingestuurd, zij het op het laatste moment; in een ogenblik van zwakte vond ik het een goed idee het festival te steunen.
Blij dat de vzw Landschap met bezielers Jan Loos en Aagje de Doncker daar hun schouders hebben onder gezet, en met succes; dit fotofestival moet blijven bestaan en hoe meer deelnemers hoe meer prestige en reden van bestaan. Het is moedig van hen om de fotowedstrijd te beperken tot beelden genomen in de Lowlands, Belgie en Nederland dus. Maar om het potentieel van deelnames te verhogen is er sinds een paar jaar toch ook een rubriek ‘Wereld’ toegevoegd.
Maar ik ben hoegenaamd geen wedstrijdfotograaf; ik ga niet op pad met het idee een beeld te schieten dat prijzen scoort. De keuze van mijn beelden is ook teveel ingegeven door emotie; de verwarmende beleving van het moment waarop ge bvb. een dier kunt fotograferen, bij voorkeur in het vrije veld, niet vanuit een schuilhut; het kunnen benaderen, vertrouwen of tolerantie winnen en uiteindelijk in ‘schietpositie’ komen. Dat zijn gelukzalige momenten. De jury beleeft die niet bij de beoordeling.
Maar een mooi portret van een al dan niet schuw of zeldzaam dier is niet wat een wedstrijdjury zoekt. Dat is me ondertussen duidelijk geworden; er wordt naar meerwaarde gezocht. En dit jaar heb ik in de keuze van mijn beelden meer abstractie kunnen maken van de emoties. En het heeft geloond!
Er waren ongeveer 6000 inzendingen verspreid over 12 categorieën. Per categorie worden er 5 beelden geselecteerd: 1 winnaar, 1 runner up en 3 eervolle vermeldingen.
Dit beeld van een sneeuwhaas is geselecteerd. Hoe groter bekeken of beter het tot zijn recht komt.
Landschap vzw is een nieuwe datum aan het zoeken voor een soort Lowland Light, waar 2 films zullen getoond worden en waar ook de prijsuitreiking zal plaatsvinden met de verkiezing van de LPOTY 2022. Maar ik weet wel dat ik een eervolle vermelding zal krijgen. Ik viel namelijk net naast het podium maar ben opgevist omdat een geselecteerde ongeoorloofde retouches had gedaan aan zijn foto! Dit was allemaal kort voor 11/12 en de rangschikking was dus al gemaakt.
En het trieste van de zaak is dat er op de 60 (5x12) finalisten een behoorlijk aantal valsspelers (al of niet gewild) zaten. Schande! Hoe groot is de geldingsdrang!
Het is dus nu wachten op een nieuwe datum voor de prijsuitreiking. En ik kijk ernaar uit mijn foto geprojecteerd te zien op het groot scherm in Ter Dilft in Bornem.

The Lowland Photo Festival was scheduled for 11 and 12 dec 2021, but was postponed at the last moment by new regulations due to Covid. They also organise a photo competition. In principle I do not participate in competitions but at the last moment I made an exception here.
Glad that the vzw Landschap with inspirers Jan Loos and Aagje de Doncker put their shoulders under this project, and with success; this photo festival deserves to stay and continue and the more participants the more prestige and reason to stay. It is a brave choice of them to limit the entries to pictures taken in the Lowlands of Belgium and the Netherlands. But to increase the potential of participants since a couple of years a ‘world’ category has been added
I am not a competition photographer, not at all. I do not go out with pictures for a competition in mind. My personal choice of pictures is too much led by emotion; the warm feeling when you can finally photograph an animal for instance, preferably in the field and not from a hide, to be able to approach it, gain trust and confidence and to finally come into ‘shooting’ position, is a heavenly bliss. The jury does not experience this when judging.
But a beautiful portrait of an animal, be it shy or rare, is not what a completion jury is looking for. That is clear for me now; the judges are looking for a surplus value. So this year I tried to put emotions at the side and it has paid off!
There were about 6000 entries over 12 categories; per category there are 5 finalists: 1 winner, 1 runner up and 3 honorable mentions (HM).

Landschap vzw is looking for a new date somewhere in early spring to organise a Lowland Light where 2 films will be shown and the award ceremony of the photo competition will be held to appoint the overall winner who will be the LPOTY 2022. In my case I know already that I will get a HM. I was initially right next to the podium, but I moved one place forward because one of the selected images before me was not treated according to the rules; not allowed LR and/or PS manipulations! This happened shortly before the festival and the classification was made.
It is sad to determine that among the 60 (5x12) finalists there were quite a few cheaters! Shame. That is how far the assertiveness goes!
So we are waiting now for the announcement of the new date for the award ceremony and I am looking forward seeing my picture projected on the big screen in Ter Delft in Bornem somewhere in early spring 2022.
